Boy did this ever hit the spot - I added a little horseradish and some minced garlic (got that little tip from Martha Stewart). This is much better than buying store bought mix. Just garnish a tall ice filled glass with a celery stick and a lemon wedge.-22 Apr 2010

Ah yes, so darn good. Also used some horseradish and a pretty stick of celery. Needed something like this to perk me up tonight as we had to put our sweet and lovable cat Oliver down today. Here's to you Ollie; you were the best!-12 Jan 2006

Remove any stems from the tomatoes and peel the carrot and beet.

Use a juicer to juice all the vegetables. Skim any foam from the juicing process.

Place the juice in the blender and add the Worcestershire sauce, lemon juice, and prepared horseradish.

Prepare Fat and Dry Ingredients

Gently heat the bacon fat and browned butter just until it has melted.

In a separate container dry mix together the black pepper, hot sauce powder, 210s, salt, paprika, and celery seed.

Blend Ingredients

Blend the juice on low speed and add in the dry mixture.

Blend for 1 minute before slowly adding the brown butter and bacon fat.

Blend until smooth and place in a sealed container for up to 2 weeks.

You may see very mild separation after 5 days but a quick shake will bring everything back together.

Create Cocktail

To make a cocktail add 45g (1 ½ oz) of vodka or tequila to a shaker cup with ice add 4-8 oz of the bloody mary mixer depending on your preference. Shake the cup for 10-20 seconds and strain into a rocks glass. Garnish with hot sauce powder, olives, crispy bacon, and a celery stalk.

Bloody Mary

The Bloody Mary is one of the world’s best known cocktails, prized for its ability to jumpstart even the groggiest of mornings. Its origins aren’t exactly clear, but the likely backstory points to the mid-1930s and Fernand “Pete” Petiot, a bartender at King Cole Bar at the St. Regis hotel in New York City.

The original Bloody Mary is believed to have contained seven ingredients: vodka, tomato juice, Worcestershire sauce, black pepper, celery salt, Tabasco and lemon juice. But like many classic drinks, it has inspired several variations. Popular versions include the Bloody Maria (made with tequila), the Red Snapper (spiked with gin) and the Caesar, a Canadian creation that features Clamato juice. Throw in the recipes concocted by bars, bartenders and enthusiasts, and the tomato-based cocktail sports countless unique twists, from heavy on the hot sauce to a splash of Guinness on top.

More recently, the Bloody Mary has inspired a garnish-based arms race, as restaurants and bars top their drinks with more insane garnishes, including bacon, shrimp skewers, lobster tails and mini cheeseburgers, turning the Bloody Mary into its own brunch. When in doubt, it’s best to start with the classic recipe and work toward the way you like it, whether that is pared down, topped with a pepperoni pizza or featuring your favorite bottled mix.

Despite the endless variations and regardless of how you choose to make it, the Bloody Mary’s staying power is not debatable. It’s a liquor-soaked nutritional breakfast and hangover cure all in one red package, and it’s one of the few cocktails that is socially acceptable to drink first thing in the morning. What else could you ask for?

Make Bloody Mary cocktails at home with this delicious recipe! This Bloody Mary mix is made from scratch with basic ingredients. It’s perfect for your next brunch. Recipe yields 4 cocktails.

  • 32 ounces ( 4 cups ) tomato juice
  • 8 ounces ( 1 cup ) vodka
  • 1 medium-to-large cucumber, peeled and seeded
  • ⅓ cup distilled vinegar
  • 1 teaspoon celery seed (not celery salt!)
  • 1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce*
  • ½ teaspoon hot sauce (I used Tapatío), more to taste
  • 1 teaspoon (about 50 twists) freshly ground black pepper
  • 2 medium cloves garlic, pressed or minced
  • ¼ teaspoon salt, optional
  • Lemon or lime wedges
  • Kosher salt, for the rims of your glasses, optional (add chili powder if you’d like)
  • Lots of ice, for serving
  • Garnishes (choose any): Celery stalks, skinny carrots with leafy tops, mini bell peppers, cherry tomatoes, dill pickle spears, pickled okra, and/or green cocktail olives

  1. In a blender, combine the tomato juice, vodka, cucumber, vinegar, celery seed, Worcestershire sauce and hot sauce. Securely fasten the lid and blend on high speed until completely smooth.
  2. Taste, and add more hot sauce for more heat (it’s going to taste quite intense now, since the mix hasn’t cooled over ice yet). Add the black pepper and garlic. Securely fasten the lid and blend for just a few seconds (or longer, for a completely smooth texture). Taste, and stir in ¼ teaspoon salt for more overall flavor if you’d like (tomato juice brands vary by salt content, so this is really up to you). Set aside.
  3. If you’d like to rim your glasses with salt, run a lemon or lime wedge around the outside rim. Pour kosher salt onto a small plate (mix in chili powder if you’d like), and roll the wet edge of the glass across the salt at a 45-degree angle. Repeat with the remaining glasses.
  4. Fill the glasses with ice, and pour the Bloody Mary mix on top. Stir with a spoon, and garnish with a lemon or lime wedge and garnishes of your choice. Serve immediately.

Recommended vodka: I prefer Tito’s. Whichever you use, be sure it’s of good quality.

*Make it vegetarian/vegan/fish-free: Most Worcestershire sauces contain anchovies, so be sure to use vegan Worcestershire sauce. I like Whole Foods 365 or Annie’s brands.
